Answer Engine Optimization Services: What You're Actually Buying

Answer engine optimization services are agency or consultancy engagements aimed at getting your brand named and cited when AI assistants answer buyer questions. The category is young, the delivery quality varies more than in traditional SEO, and a meaningful share of what is sold as AEO is repackaged content marketing.

This guide covers what the work genuinely involves, what a real deliverable looks like, and the questions that separate capability from positioning.

What the work actually consists of

Credible AEO work covers four areas. An engagement missing any of them has a gap you should know about before signing.

Measurement. Establishing how assistants currently describe you, using unbranded buyer questions across multiple engines, sampled repeatedly. This is the baseline everything else is judged against. If an engagement begins with content production rather than measurement, nobody will be able to tell later whether it worked.

Extraction fixes. Making your existing pages quotable. This is unglamorous technical and editorial work: stating the answer before the supporting argument, using question-shaped headings that match real phrasing, adding valid structured data, and ensuring content is server-rendered rather than assembled client-side. Most sites have significant wins available here without publishing anything new.

Off-site presence. Getting your brand onto the third-party pages models draw shortlists from, which means roundups, comparison articles, review directories and community discussions. This is the part most similar to digital PR, and it is frequently the highest-leverage work because you cannot cite yourself into a model's shortlist.

Re-measurement. Running the same questions again and reporting movement. Without this, an engagement is unfalsifiable.

Where AEO diverges from an SEO retainer

The overlap is real. Both need crawlable pages, clear writing and credible coverage. If an agency tells you AEO requires discarding everything you learned in SEO, they are selling novelty.

The genuine divergence is in reporting. An SEO retainer reports positions and organic traffic. Neither concept exists inside an AI answer: there is no ranked list to hold a position in, and a user who got their answer in the chat frequently never visits your site at all. An AEO engagement that reports traffic charts is reporting on the wrong surface, which is the most common tell that an agency has relabelled its existing service.

What correct reporting looks like: here are the buyer questions we track, here is which assistants named you at baseline, here is which name you now, and here is where competitors still hold the shortlist. The underlying measurement logic is covered in what is an AI visibility score.

The questions that expose weak providers

Ask these directly. The answers are diagnostic.

"Show me a client's before and after." The strong answer includes unbranded questions, at least three assistants, and repeated sampling. Weak answers show a single screenshot of one assistant naming the client, which proves nothing because answers vary between runs.

"Do your test prompts contain the client's brand name?" If yes, they are measuring recall rather than discovery. A model asked about a brand by name will describe it; that says nothing about whether a buyer would encounter it.

"Which assistants do you measure?" Coverage of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity is the baseline. Single-engine measurement hides the variance that determines what to fix.

"What happens in month four?" After the initial content batch ships, does the engagement become maintenance, or is there ongoing measurement and off-site work? This question surfaces whether you are buying a project dressed as a retainer.

"How do you handle attribution?" The honest answer acknowledges that clean causal attribution is hard in AI search, and offers a defensible timeline instead. An agency claiming precise causal attribution is overstating what the medium allows.

Service, platform, or both

These solve different problems and the choice depends on your team.

A platform gives you continuous measurement and diagnosis. It is the right choice when you have people who can act on findings. Its failure mode is a subscription nobody opens after month two.

A service does the work for you. It is the right choice when you lack capacity. Its failure mode is being unable to evaluate the work, because you have no independent scoreboard.

Many teams run both deliberately: the platform is the scoreboard, and the agency plays against it. That arrangement also removes the awkwardness of an agency grading its own homework, which is worth more than it sounds.

If you are evaluating platforms, how to choose an AI visibility platform covers the see, fix and prove framework in detail, and best AI visibility tools compares the main options.

Before you sign anything

Get an independent baseline. Walking into an agency conversation without one means you cannot tell whether the problem they describe is the problem you have, and you will have nothing to judge month six against.

The free AI Visibility Scorecard runs unbranded category questions across the major assistants in about a minute. Take the result into the sales conversation. Good agencies will engage with it specifically. That reaction alone is one of the more reliable signals available to you.

For the underlying tactics, whether you do the work in-house or buy it, content optimization for LLMs and why competitors appear in AI search but you don't cover the substance of what a good engagement should be doing.
