AI Visibility Score
An AI Visibility Score is a composite metric — usually 0 to 100 — that quantifies how often, how prominently, and how positively a brand appears in AI-generated responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. It is the standard outcome metric for measuring whether GEO and AEO work is actually moving the needle inside AI answers.
What the score actually measures
Any honest AI Visibility Score has to combine four signals that capture different facets of appearing in an AI answer. Mentions — does your brand name appear at all in the response? Mentions matter most because no presence beats any other metric. Prominence — when mentioned, where in the answer? First sentence, top three, deep in the list? Prominence captures the AI's implicit ranking. Citations — does the response link to your domain, name your URL, or just mention you in passing? A cited URL is the most actionable form of presence because it drives traffic and reinforces authority on the next training run. Sentiment — is the AI describing you positively ("leader", "recommended"), neutrally, or with negative framing?
The TopSlot Score uses a weighted combination: Mentions 40%, Prominence 30%, Citations 20%, Sentiment 10%. The weighting reflects how each signal actually drives buyer behavior. Mentions are the gate — if you are not mentioned, nothing else matters. Prominence shapes the buyer's mental shortlist. Citations create downstream verifiable traffic. Sentiment matters but is fragile (single negative reviews can swing it) so it gets the smallest weight in our composite.
How to interpret your score
Score bands based on our observations from running scorecards across categories: 0–10 means AI does not know you exist. 11–30 indicates emerging visibility — you appear in some but not most relevant queries. 31–50 is moderate — buyers will see you about half the time. 51–70 is strong — you are a default candidate in most category queries. 71–85 is dominant — you are named first or near-first in nearly every relevant answer. Above 85 is rare and usually reserved for category-defining brands that AI models treat as the canonical example.
A single score is less useful than the trajectory and the per-model breakdown. A brand at 45 with a per-model split of 80 / 60 / 30 / 10 across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity has a very different problem than a brand at 45 with a flat 45 / 45 / 45 / 45 split. The first has a Perplexity-specific freshness gap. The second has a base-authority gap. The fix is different in each case.
Why most other "AI visibility" numbers are misleading
Several tools ship an "AI Visibility Score" that is just mention frequency, ignoring prominence and sentiment. Some build the score by asking the AI about your brand by name, which generates a positive confirmation bias — the model knows you when you mention yourself; that tells you nothing about whether buyers will see you when they don't. TopSlot uses a zero-brand-name methodology: every query is a generic buyer-intent question that never names the brand being audited, so the result reflects what your buyers actually see.
How TopSlot calculates and tracks your score
The free AI Visibility Scorecard runs a single audit across two models in about 60 seconds and returns a category-only result. The paid AI Search Tracker runs up to 25 buyer-intent prompts four times a day across all four models, generating a daily score with full per-model breakdowns, prompt-level diagnostics, and competitor comparisons. The AI Ranking module extends this to your real Search Console queries, so the score reflects your actual buyer language rather than a generic prompt list.
Improvement signals flow from the tracker into AI Strategy Advisor, which generates weekly Wins / Alerts / Opportunities briefings: where your score moved up and why, where it slipped, and which prompts a single fix would push you over the threshold on. The Wednesday brief is the operational artifact most teams act on each week.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI visibility score?
An AI visibility score is a numerical metric, typically on a 0 to 100 scale, that quantifies how prominently and positively a brand appears in AI-generated responses. It combines factors like mention frequency, prominence, citations, and sentiment across multiple AI models.
How is the TopSlot Score calculated?
The TopSlot Score is calculated as a weighted average of four components: Mentions (40%), Prominence (30%), Citations (20%), and Sentiment (10%). Each component is scored independently across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude, then combined into a single 0-100 score.
What is a good AI visibility score?
Scores above 70 are considered strong, indicating consistent brand presence across AI platforms. Scores between 40 and 70 suggest room for improvement. Scores below 40 indicate limited AI visibility. The average score varies by industry and competition level.
